چکیده

34 35 The role of pathogens, including oomycetes, in long-term ecosystem development has 36 remained largely unknown, despite hypotheses that pathogens drive primary succession, 37 determine mature ecosystem plant diversity, or dominate in retrogressive, nutrient-limited 38 ecosystems. Using DNA sequencing from roots, we investigated the frequency and host 39 relationships of oomycete communities along a 120 000 year glacial chronosequence. 40 Oomycetes were frequent in early successional sites (5 70 yrs), occurring in 38 – 65% of 41 plant roots, but rare (average 3%) in all older ecosystems (280 yrs and older). Oomycetes 42 were highly host specific, and more frequent on plant species that declined most strongly in 43 abundance between ecosystem ages. In contrast, oomycetes were not correlated with plant 44 abundance or plant root traits associated with retrogression. The results support the 45 importance of root pathogens in early succession, but not thereafter, suggesting root 46 pathogen-driven dynamics may be important in driving succession but not long-term 47 diversity maintenance. 48 49 not peer-reviewed) is the author/funder. Nitrogen dynamics vary across hydrologic gradients and by forest community composition in the perhumid coastal temperate rainforest of southeast Alaska

Nitrogen (N) limitation constrains plant growth, but complex interactions among species and ecosystems hinder our ability to identify primary drivers of N availability. Hydrologic, biogeochemical, and ecological processes interact spatially and temporally, requiringmeasurements of N across diverse ecosystem types and as a function of both site conditions and vegetation composition.Wemeasured in...

Fast-cycling unit of root turnover in perennial herbaceous plants in a cold temperate ecosystem

Roots of perennial plants have both persistent portion and fast-cycling units represented by different levels of branching. In woody species, the distal nonwoody branch orders as a unit are born and die together relatively rapidly (within 1-2 years). However, whether the fast-cycling units also exist in perennial herbs is unknown. We monitored root demography of seven perennial herbs over two y...

Declining foliar and litter δ¹⁵N diverge from soil, epiphyte and input δ¹⁵N along a 120,000 yr temperate rainforest chronosequence.

Patterns in the natural abundance of nitrogen (N) isotopes (¹⁵N and ¹⁴N) can help in the understanding of ecosystem processes along environmental gradients, because some processes fractionate against the heavier isotope. We measured δ¹⁵N in many components of the Franz Josef soil chronosequence in New Zealand to see how each component varied along the sequence and within sites, and to see what ...

Contrasting Diversity and Host Association of Ectomycorrhizal Basidiomycetes versus Root-Associated Ascomycetes in a Dipterocarp Rainforest

Root-associated fungi, including ectomycorrhizal and root-endophytic fungi, are among the most diverse and important belowground plant symbionts in dipterocarp rainforests. Our study aimed to reveal the biodiversity, host association, and community structure of ectomycorrhizal Basidiomycota and root-associated Ascomycota (including root-endophytic Ascomycota) in a lowland dipterocarp rainforest...

Phosphorus limitation, soil-borne pathogens and the coexistence of plant species in hyperdiverse forests and shrublands.

Hyperdiverse forests occur in the lowland tropics, whereas the most species-rich shrublands are found in regions such as south-western Australia (kwongan) and South Africa (fynbos). Despite large differences, these ecosystems share an important characteristic: their soils are strongly weathered and phosphorus (P) is a key growth-limiting nutrient. Soil-borne pathogens are increasingly being rec...
